Biography:
Gertrude was the thirteenth of thirteen children and the daughter of Dutch immigrants.
According to her daughter, Frances, she grew up on an onion farm in South Holland,
Illinois and she spoke Dutch with her parents at home. After marriage, she continued
this tradition by speaking Dutch with her husband and children. The family moved
around a lot, living in different cities in Illinois in, at least, 1910, 1917, 1930,
and 1942 while in 1920 they were in Minnesota. Later in life, Gertrude moved in
with her daughter, Frances, who was living in Sharon, Wisconsin at the time.
Gertrude was a housekeeper.
